John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, has died I read his book Enough: True Measures of Money, Business and Life that I wish more capitalists would read. Enough is what ought to be our true aspiration.
Hey, CNET published an article with my alma mater in the headlines! Autonomous boats? What about autonomous snowmobiles?
So, Mitch McConnell is the literally the person causing the shutdown because as the Republican Senate majority leader he refuses to take up the appropriations bills passed by the House of Representatives. Blame Mitch not Trump.
If you recall from How A Bill Becomes A Law, Congress has the ability to override the President’s veto. So, if the Senate passed the bills passed by the House, they go to the President, and if he vetos then is back in Congress' power to override the bills in which they become law.
So once again, Congress has within its power given to it by the Constitution to govern and like so many times in the past Mitch McConnell is not living up to his oath.
It’s time to start putting pressure on the Republicans and McConnell.
I was wrong last year when I wrote in Android On Tablets that Google would not sell another tablet. The Pixel Slate is a tablet even if Google prefers to market it like a 2-in-1.
In some ways we may have a reformation taking place today in the United States. Perhaps we ought to consider it a U.S. Democratic Reformation away from Representative democracy to a Direct democracy . If this is the case then like Gutenberg’s printing press, the Internet appears to be the technological advancement that is enabling this reformation. Fueled by the Internet. More on this thought on my wiki.
They want us to become really afraid; they want us to become divided; they want us to join their “us and them” thing. On a larger scale, I think we have to resist that. It’s an argument for celebrating and nurturing our diversity and nurturing our multicultural society, and our pluralism.

All we have done since 9/11 is become more and more divided, so much so that we now have a POTUS who revels in the dividing.
“The United States rests on a dedication to equality, which is chiefly a moral idea, rooted in Christianity, but it rests, too, on a dedication to inquiry, fearless and unflinching.” from “These Truths: A History of the United States” by Jill Lepore
The real problem with social networks like Facebook and Twitter is that they require using their servers that store all of what you write and share. By nature of the fact that you are using their servers Facebook and Twitter have the right and ability to access what you write and share.
A peer to peer network takes a server, like Facebook and Twitter’s, out of the middle. What you write and share goes directly from your computer to the computer of others on the peer to peer network. Because this information can actually end up on many more computers most peer to peer networks encrypt what is passed around. Consequently, only the people who have access to your public or private keys can actually read what you write. (By the way, in a simple way I have just explained one reason why blockchain has been written so much about.)
I am intrigued by the number of alternative social network products being developed. Some consider micro.blog, which I have been using, as one. I think of Micro.blog as a hybrid decentralized environment, but which I mean you can use it to either store content on their server, like I do, or use it to facilitate content you store an other site. I store what I write on my blog and transmit copies of that to Twitter and Facebook.
However, I suspect that if it becomes dead simple, reliable, and secure, a peer-to-peer type of network like Secure Scuttlebutt will be the winner.
Scuttlebutt is a decentralized, secure gossip platform. Gossip is a method (protocol) for computers to talk with each other.
Track your time with an 8 sided die. Does anyone else get D&D flashbacks?
I’ve developed a pretty efficient workflow for adding pages to my wiki. I created the Index page before I learned that you can have a alphabetized list of a site’s pages display by clicking in the Search box and pressing ENTER.
I’ve used Evernote for a long time. One of the problems I have always had with Evernote is that it doesn’t really provide a simple structure for notes. With just Notebooks and Tags building structure can turn your Evernote environment in to a big mess.
Kanbanote looks like an interesting alternative for layering a structured view on top of Evernote, treating Evernote as a back end data store.
Remember when a president who really wanted to start a war in Iraq claimed there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and he had his war and no such weapons were found? Seems to me we have another president making similar claims of a crisis to get his way. We ought to be skeptical.
Let’s start with a request for the project plan for building this wall. Where is the budget? Where are the bids for the construction? How do we know the price is $5 billion and not $10 billion or $2 billion?
Its all theater. Like taking off your shoes at the airport and it is time that people opened their eyes.
So ridiculous that it once again raises the frightening question of how a president who can’t successfully manage peace and prosperity would manage to deal with an actual national crisis. Vox
We could have treated the election like a job interview and elect the candidate qualified for the job, but instead a number of people in certain states preferred to vote for the reality TV star.
I played with Google Assistant and IFTTT today, one outcome of which is a way to tell the Assistant to add an entry to my Day One journal.
Why are our representatives trying to pass any legislation to prohibit boycotts of Israel or any other country or topic? With other pressing matters, how is this even a priority?
